I need to rewatch this. I saw it when it was first out and it avoided all my expectations so thoroughly that I could only watch in a species of confusion. It did not steer by the familiar reference points, so it was like watching a foreign movie, trying to learn the language in the process. I wanted to become fluent because that kind of movie is so rare it is almost automatically compelling -- plus this one was gorgeous -- but I did not fully succeed over the course of the show. So thanks for this lucid essay, a big help six or seven years later I can take with me on a rewatch.
